Careers Week
Mrs Couzens has responsibility to ensure that each student has access to appropriate careers advice whether this is provided through a home-county careers advisor or accessing our in-house careers programme. To broaden student's understanding of pathways into employment, tutors are given a 'job of the week' to consider and discuss with their tutor group. Teachers will be expected to regularly weave careers information into their delivery of the Key Stage three curriculum, for example when exploring key figures or considering recent research in their subject. In addition, key stage three students will receive specific careers lessons aimed at developing their personal understanding of their preferences and strengths. In Key Stage four, careers education will become more bespoke, with one to one guidance sessions and also through our BTEC Vocational course which has a core unit focussed on career pathway planning.
Career Planning information will be recorded at the appropriate reviews and students' records of aims and thoughts relating to their futures will be collated. Impartial advice is sought through an annual interview with independent staff from 'Reach for Inclusion' who provide each senior student with a comprehensive IAG report to help students with their future choices.
The whole school are involved in a week of career related activities. There are interviews with external professionals and uniformed services, visits to Universities, taster days with local training providers, work placements and chance to ask questions of a range of working adults.
In 2025 student visits included Wolverhampton and Chester Universities; a Construction site, Nidec Corporation, Netley Interiors and Decostitch; RENU Vehicle Maintenance and Hair and Beauty, Shrewsbury Town FC training facilities and an Outdoor Pursuits company. Visiting professionals in school included interviews with the Police, an office worker, a sports trainer and a First Aider. In school there was a session with an Art Illustrator and a musical recording workshop.
